The Center News ~ July 2008

From The Front Office

By the time this newsletter is out the CCC building project will be winding down for now, with the lavatories completed, the trim up on the new walls in the front room and the flooring done. (This is where the drum roll and cymbals come in!) Phew! That was a long haul, but certainly worth it, as anyone who has seen the building lately will agree.

Our plan now is to complete the application process for the Appropriations we are receiving, (ah yes, government applications can certainly be a challenge....) which can take up to several months, then we will know how to proceed with our renovations. The grant funds that we have not yet spent are needed to remain in reserve for the matching funds that will be required for the Appropriations. However, once those funds come through we will be able to resume the construction, which could be as early as this fall. I will be certain to let you all know just as soon as we learn what our time-line is.

I want to take this opportunity to thank a couple of great guys for all their help. Gary Davis and Reed Engel have spent countless extra, unpaid hours working on the Community Center renovation project. Their tireless dedication has helped to bring the vision to fruition, and I know we couldn't have done it without them! So, thanks, guys!

There have been many other people helping with this renovation project, too numerous to mention, and too invaluable to not wholeheartedly thank. So, to all of you, a big sincere thank-you!

I would like to welcome Julie Greenwood as our newest part-time staff person. Julie's job is helping me handle the accounting end of the office work, which is greatly needed as my job gets more and more complex and involved.

Line Dancing classes are over for the summer, but will resume in September. The International Folk Dance classes will also begin again in September, along with our most recent addition to our educational arts program, Lorrie Fraley Wilson School of Dance (LFW North). More details on those classes will be coming soon. Christy Wentz is still teaching belly dancing at the CCC on Fridays, 3-4pm all through the summer months.

This month we have two fun and entertaining music events - Steve Kinzie and Friends on Friday, July 11 and Rose Laughlin on Saturday, July 26. Opening for Steve Kinzie will be our very own Hippies on Vacation (with Reed Engel, Tim Alley and John Jones).

Steve, a singer/songwriter who's originally from Tonasket, brings his own unique sound to the stage; a combination of old-time folk on banjo and guitar, with somewhat of a jazz/blues inspired sound. If you have high-speed internet you can listen to a sample of his music at: http://web.mac.com/biondos/Kinzie/May_Day.html There will not be a dinner served that night, but baked goods and beverages will be available. Hippies on Vacation will start at 8:00, with Steve Kinzie and Friends playing at 9.

Rose Laughlin, a folksinger with Celtic roots, comes from the Seattle area, and a selection of her music is accessible to download at www.roselaughlin.com. We will be offering a dinner that evening, beginning at 6:00, with the show starting at 8. The price for dinner is $7 /adult's plate, and half that for children 10 and under, with baked goods and beverages also available.

Admission for both these events is $5 for CCC members, seniors and students and $6 for the general public. As usual, children get in for free if accompanied by an adult.
Hope to see you all there!

Until next month,

River

Ride Share column offered

Are you planning a trip over to Seattle this month, or thinking about going to see your family down in Oregon sometime this summer? Is the outrageously high price of fuel keeping you from traveling?

The Center News is offering a possible solution: a monthly Ride-Share feature, where you may be able to link up with someone driving your way or needing a ride that you could provide, and sharing the cost of gasoline. This would also work for folks who go to Omak or Oroville, etc. on a regular basis for work or other obligations.

Simply email your submission to by the 24th of the month, and we will include it in the following month's newsletter. Please include your phone number or other contact information - the CCC will not be involved in setting any rides up - that will be up to the individuals.

The SolarShop

Online newsletter an option

Now that the CCC website is up and running with most of the kinks worked out, we are checking in with members to see if you'd prefer to read your newsletter on the internet and discontinue getting the paper copy in the mail.

This may work nicely for those of you with high-speed or wireless internet access, and it would save precious resources as well as money. (Postage alone costs the Center about $60 each month.) If you so choose, you will receive a monthly message via email that the newsletter is on the website and ready to read with a link you can simply click on. This is probably not the preferred method for those of you with the slower dial-up service, but it is a site that loads fairly quickly even then, (thanks to our website builder).

So, for those who would like to choose a greener method of staying informed about your Community Center please email the office at and let us know.

Tonasket Farmers' Market Offers Fresh Fare

The Tonasket Farmers' Market is up and running, with salad greens, early veggies, fresh hothouse tomatoes, garden starts, handmade items and more arriving weekly.

There is plenty of room for Farmers' Market vendors at Triangle Park, the little park just north of town, across from Al's IGA grocery store. Anyone wishing to sell should know the guidelines - mainly governing the types of products (no resale items; goods must be produced by the seller) and some guidelines on pricing.

The Farmers' Market Guidelines are available at the CCC office or from Matt Welles, the Market Manager. Booth spaces are still $5 a day. Call the CCC office or Matt Welles at 486-8803 with any additional questions.

Help support Tonasket's local economy and shop the Farmers' Market Thursdays, from 3-7pm.

* Fiona Thanks You *

A huge THANK-YOU to all those who came to Fiona's Open House on June 7 and 8. All who came made the weekend a big success. Thank you to the musicians and poets who volunteered their time and talent to entertain and inspire us, the artists and crafters who started the whole idea, the guests and friends old and new, and a special thank you to Peter James who just jumped in and kept things moving.

With appreciation,
Sandy and Carol.

Vendor Space Still Available for Okanogan River Garlic Festival

There are still a number of vendor spaces available for this year's Okanogan River Garlic Festival, which will be held on Friday, August 15, 12:00 noon until 8:00 pm and Saturday, August 16, 10:00 am until 5:00 pm.

As usual, there will be a lot of entertainment, including dance performances and live theater, dance bands, children's activities, and much much more.

Booth fees are still the same as in years past, and are as follows: non-food vendors are $15 for one day and $25 both days for a 10x10 space or $45 for a 10x20 space. Food booths are offered an entire 10x20 space, which will cost $75. Only the 10x10 non-food booths will be considered for one day; all others will be for both days of the Festival. Set- up will begin at 9:00 am on Friday morning.

Food vendors must obtain a current Okanogan County Health permit. The Okanogan County Health District's phone number is: (509) 422-7140.

There will be plenty of camping at Tonasket's History Park where the festival is held, for any vendors who need to spend the night.

Being a Garlic Festival is a big job for a little event. Shoppers come to buy all sorts of garlic products and last year folks were looking for garlic jellies, garlic braids, garlic-y foods, etc. So, all you garlic growers out there, and anyone else looking for a festival that's fun and profitable, we invite you to participate, and bring your garlic and garlic related products!

The next Garlic Fest planning meeting will be Thursday, July 17 at 3pm.
Anyone interested in helping with this year's event is encouraged to attend!
