The Center News ~ September 2008

From The Front Office

September’s here, and with it comes the promise that fall is just around the corner. (Some of us in the highlands are almost there – morning temperatures at my house have been dipping into the mid-30’s!) I, for one, am glad – I’ve always enjoyed each new season when it comes.

September’s calendar is already filling up with meetings, dance classes and a new exciting production by our very own Tonasket Community Theater. The Line Dancing classes, taught by Naomi Alloway, will be resuming on Wednesdays, 5:30-7. The two newest classes that are being offered are children’s dance taught by Stacey Gleason, of LFW School of Dance, and a creative movement class taught by Katie Johann and Aurora Jones. More information and a contact numbers are in the articles below.

The 9th Annual Okanogan River Garlic Festival was lots of fun, in spite of the triple digit temperatures. Good thing it was held in Tonasket’s History Park! The trees, river and green grass all helped to keep us cool, and on Saturday a delightful mister was provided for folks young and old to run through! Thank you to Morning Star for bringing “Mister- Mister”!

Again, I must thank everybody who makes the Community Cultural Center happen. The Garlic Festival is another perfect example of how, working together, we can create something that’s so much bigger than any one of us can accomplish alone. From the committee that met regularly, to the musicians who performed for nothing more than gas money and food, and everyone in between, it was the group effort that made the event the success it was.

That’s how the CCC works – it’s absolutely a group effort that keeps us going as strong as we are. And, it’s so much more fun to do things with others than trying to go it alone! I have made many new friends and have strengthened old bonds since I have been at the Center. Everybody who comes through that door has something to offer the community, and the CCC is the venue to make it possible! So, thank YOU to all our members and supporters who give the CCC the opportunity to provide that place in Tonasket.

Some future dates to mark on your calendars are our annual fundraising auction on Saturday, November 1st and the CCC Annual Membership Meeting on November 15th. We’ll be sending out more notices on these two very important events, and just so you know, we have some surprises in store for you so be sure to plan on coming!

Until next month,
River

September 25th through September 28th the Tonasket Community Theater will present Animal Farm, based on George Orwell's famous novel.

Directed by Sarah Kaiser, the cast includes 16 community members from Tonasket and Oroville ages 7 to 65. Meeting Focuses on National Forest Management Plan

Attention Forest Watchers: the Okanogan National Forest is working on a new plan to manage the national forests in Okanogan County. Come to a meeting at the CCC on Tuesday evening, Sept 30, 6:30 pm to talk to the USFS planners and the Northeast Forestry Coalition, a group in which Tim Coleman, Kettle Range Conservation Group, is a lead participant.

The Forestry Coalition, which includes industry and conservation members, has been doing collaborative forest planning for the Colville Forest, and its been working out great: excellent care of the forest, surplus wood for the timber industry, and, best of all, a cessation of hostilities and old conflicts.

This meeting is sponsored by Jere and Rick Gillespie. They can be reached at (509) 422-1976 for further information. They encourage concerned people to come on out to show how many folks care about our forests and are interested in how they are taken care of.

Many members and supporters have helped donate money to the CCC by using www.goodsearch.com. In case you haven't tried this yet, it is a search engine powered by Yahoo! Search. If you use this Website to do your searching from, for each search there is a donation of one cent to the CCC. Just go to that site and type in Community Cultural Center of Tonasket and hit verify. Now all your searches will earn money for the CCC.

A brand new function is now available from the same site. It is called Good Shop. When you hit this link, you can shop at more than 500 great stores online and because your reaching their site from Good Search, a percentage of the sale automatically gets contributed to the CCC.

Each store shows what percentage they donate. The stores are common stores you may be shopping at already. Searching and shopping cost you nothing, but you can still be donating to the CCC. You can also click on "amount raised". This shows you how much is being donated through searches and shopping, so you can see how it adds up.

Check it out at www.goodsearch.com. You can create a shortcut to put on your desktop to remember to Good Search for the Community Cultural Center, or click on button on the Website that gives you a toolbar to put on your Internet program.

Like pennies in a jar, many small donations can equal a lot.

Acting Class beginning at CCC

Katie Johann will be offering an acting group on Tuesday evenings for ages 13 to adult. The class will include exercises to get over self-consciousness when acting, and learning techniques for getting out of your head and into character. Katie will also work with actors currently involved in plays to help with deepening character involvement. The class will culminate with some deep scene study and finally, perform an evening of scenes.

Katie is the founder of Young Dancers of Tonasket, as well as a dedicated and talented student of acting. Having studied the Meisner Technique of acting, Katie is now offering to share that knowledge with thespians and others who are seriously interested in acting. Meisner Training is based on an interdependent series of exercises that build upon one another. Developing both spontaneity and improvisation are key components to the training. “We'll be diving deeper, going below the surface, so be prepared,” promises Katie.

Class will meet Tuesdays at 5pm. Registration is ongoing, but will stop once the scene work has started.

Cost is: $20 per month for youth under 16; $35 per month for adults.
The first TWO classes are free of charge!

Please call Katie at 486-8131 for more information or to register.
