The Center News ~ July 2009

From The Front Office

Things have slowed down a bit here at the Center as they do every summer, but June was still a very active month, nonetheless. Aside from the many, many kids filling the building during the week of Art Camp, we’ve been home to several local fundraisers, meetings and a few private parties on top of that. I love to see that our building is being used so much by our local community--again proof of our success as a true community center!

We have a few events lined up for July--more about those in the following pages of this newsletter. We are also in the midst of planning several upcoming events--the Garlic Festival next month and a couple of dinner and music events scheduled for September and October. Driftwood Fire, a trio of women from Fort Collins, Colorado will be performing September 4th. Their sound, described as 'Indy Folk' is upbeat and melodic, combining vocals and instrumentals for our listening pleasure. And then on October 3rd, Horse Crazy Cowgirl Band from Winthrop will grace our stage, so be sure to save those dates.

There’s not much new to report on the building remodel--we all know these things always seem to take twice as much time and twice as much money than you ever thought they would. Once we’ve ironed out the final kinks everything will move along smoothly, and I’ll be sure to keep you all updated on the progress.

I want to take a moment to thank the CCC Board of Directors--nine very dedicated and hard working folks. Often the tasks they perform are not ever seen by the membership or the greater community, and yet they are such an integral part of the success of this organization. I feel it’s an honor and privilege to work beside these terrific people--together we make a great team!

In closing, I want to thank you all, the membership of the CCC, for joining us on this amazing journey-- the creation of the Community Cultural Center.

Until next month,

River

An Inside View From Board Member Suzanne Dailey Howard

Did you ever wonder what goes on at the monthly board meetings? Do we plan and organize the fun and educational events held at the CCC? Yes, but that's just a fraction of what your board does. Mostly we deal with the 'nuts and bolts' of keeping the Center open and running, the day-to-day expenses and budget, how to make payroll and pay our utilities. I'll be brutally honest here: we really need your help.

Wait a minute! Hasn't the CCC gotten some major grants? Thanks to the hard work of our grant writers, we have funds to finance our back room major remodeling project. However, those funds are restricted under the terms of the grants for use only on the remodel. We're not permitted to pay any operating costs with grant monies. While the remodel is in progress we are not able to rent out the back room to help cover our costs. So we are faced with this temporary dilemma of increased expenses as well as decreased income. We've brainstormed solutions. Staff hours have been cut, and fundraising events have been organized.

How can you help? There are lots of opportunities to show your love for your Community Cultural Center.

Those are just a few ideas. I realize we could never have come this far without your involved support. In that spirit, ask yourself how you can help us achieve our goals. Thank you in advance from your CCC board.

CCC Dinner and Music Event This Month – Food Donations Welcome

The Community Cultural Center will be hosting a fundraiser event to raise funds for summer operations on Saturday, July 11. We will be serving up a variety of cool salads and beverages for supper, and a line up of talented local musicians for your entertainment. Performing will be Chesaw Jam, featuring Sunny Lanigan, Sandy Vaughan, Ron and Judy Hyde, along with several other friends. Dinner will begin at 6:30 and music will follow.

The band, Chesaw Jam, performs mainly 'oldtime' music on instruments such as guitar, mandolin, fiddle, sax and harmonica. We are hoping for donations of local foods for our salad ingredients, so anyone who can contribute please call the CCC office or Janet Culp at 486-2061.

The cost will be $10 for dinner and music for members, and $11 for the general public. Children under 12 are half price, and for the music only admission is $5. The event will be held in the front dining hall, which is air conditioned, so come one, come all to this family event. See you there!

10th Annual Okanogan River Garlic Fest Update

There is still plenty of room for vendors at this year’s Okanogan River Garlic Festival, slated for August 21 and 22 this year. Booth spaces will still cost the same as last year--$25 for a 10X10’ for both days and $15 for just one day. Food booth fees are $75 for both Friday and Saturday for a 10X20’ space. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged although every effort will be made to place all vendors.

As usual, there will be ongoing local entertainment all day, both days, and hopefully a few new surprises awaiting us!

One exciting new change for this year’s festival is the addition of local winetasting booths. At least three, maybe more local wineries will be joining us for this special occasion, the 10th anniversary of our hometown event.

The planning committee meets regularly and anyone is welcome to participate in pre-event preparations. The next meeting will be Tuesday, July 14th at 2:30pm at the CCC. Anyone interested who cannot make the meeting is urged to call the office at 486-1328 and talk to River Jones, CCC director. There are still a number of jobs available.

Volunteers are needed to help with this year's Garlic Festival. There are many jobs still available! Call River at the CCC Offive 486-1328. It's really lots of fun!

Theater Production Coming To CCC July 15 and 16

Local theater tradition at the Community Cultural Center continues this month with the play, "Women" performed on Thursday, July 16 and Friday, July 17 at 7:00 pm.

This production is a one woman play about four different characters--personalities that on a deeper level, most of us will identify with. Written by English playwright Arnold Wesker, it deals with the insecurities we all feel occasionally. Very well written, this play is a one-act show of about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Katie Johann, who is performing the show, is planning to take it to several other locations after its Tonasket debut. Come and support her in this endeavor by attending the show.

Tickets are $8 adults, and $6 seniors if purchased at the Tonasket Natural Foods Co-op in advance and $10 and $8 respectively, at the door. Due to some mature content this show is not recommended for children.

CCC Farmers Market Booth

The CCC is having a booth at the Farmers’ Market each Thursday this season. We will be selling baked goods and beverages (iced tea & lemonade) to benefit our operations fund. We will be in need of baked goods for this booth and we are hoping that the membership can help us out.

Cookies need to be individually wrapped. We can sell brownies, cup cakes, slices of cake or pie (also individually wrapped). You can either bring items to the Center on Thursdays or bring it directly to the market booth, between 2:30 and 4:00. It is not necessary to list all ingredients, but please, nothing with nuts.

Another way our members can assist would be to help staff the booth. Presently our Board of Directors are doing this, but there could be times that we need someone to fill in. Anyone interested in helping in this way please contact River in the office and let her know.

We feel that this will give us a presence at the market, and along with pamphlets and flyers we can advertise who we are and what we are doing in the near future.

Artists’ Paint-In -- Fun and Inspirational

For the past several years the CCC has been the place for a monthly Artists’ “Paint-In” on the third Sunday of each month, 10 am - 4 pm.

This informal gathering of artists and students of art was inspired by Stephanie Clark, a local watercolor artist and teacher. Although dubbed 'Paint-In' this group is not limited to fine arts--carvers, fiber artists, and anyone else who would like to join in is encouraged to attend. Bring your artwork to share and discuss if you want to, pack your lunch and come ready to be stimulated and inspired!

A $5 donation per participant is generally given to the CCC for the day’s usage of the building.

The CCC will be sponsoring a Rummage Sale July 31st and August 1st. Anyone with goods to donate please bring them in AFTER the July session of Art Camp is over (July 10). PLEASE no garbage! Questions? call the office at 486-1328

Camp Director, Jody Olson said it was a great success, with an average of about 68 kids a day participating in the program. This year’s event, the fifth annual summer art camp, was largely funded by two generous grants--one from O.F.F. (Okanogan Family Faire) and the other from the Community Foundation of North Central Washington located in Wenatchee, WA.

Dayton Edmonds Continuing this month, Apple Hill Art Camp will offer two sessions for older students--one week at the CCC and one week at St. Anne’s Church in Omak. These classes are for children ages 11 through 16, and these campers will be able to go into more depth with their artistic explorations. The art forms being offered include woodcarving, beginning and advanced drawing, hand drumming, whittling, painting t-shirts, wire sculpture, clay and mosaics, silkscreen, felting and more. The classes at both camps will begin at 10am and last until 3pm, with an hour for lunch. Each class will be two hours long, giving the students lots of time to fully delve into their studies.

paper hat Art Camp at the CCC will be July 6 through 10 and Omak’s classes will be July 13 through 17. The cost to attend is $5/ day per student, and if they sign up for both camps, every day, the cost is a mere $40. There are still a few available spaces, but these will fill up quickly, so be sure to register as soon as possible. Contact Jody Olson at 509-322-4071 to register or for more information. Volunteers are needed for much of this endeavor, although artists do get compensated for their work. Anyone interested in working on this project next year please contact Jody and let her know. Our future is our children, and art is a vital part of life for them to experience.
