The Center News ~ August 2009

From The Front Office

August promises to be another busy month, opening with the fundraiser Rummage Sale, ending with the 10th Annual Okanogan River Garlic Festival, and several functions in between.

But in spite of the sweltering temps outside we’re all keeping our cool as the activities heat up. (We did get the cooling system repaired... that may have helped a bit...) Joking aside, we have been getting busy again and with all the recent support, operations have been smooth. I even had the chance to take a vacation--thanks to board members Suzanne Howard and Susie Shaddox who took care of the office while I was gone. Life certainly is good!

There are a few items of interest to share with everyone. One is that the CCC has contracted with the Forest Service and the DNR to make fire lunches in our certified kitchen in the event of a fire camp in town. If you are interested in joining us please call the office and let me know. You do not need to have a valid food handler’s card as long as there are two others who do. The only requirement would be to enjoy working with food along with great company, and as an added bonus you’ll have the satisfaction that you’re helping your center to raise operations funds.

We also would like to invite all members to attend the next annual membership meeting scheduled for September 26. The plan for the evening is to serve dinner at 6pm, meet at 7 and offer entertainment at 8. Several details still need to be worked out, such as menu and performers, however the plan is to again offer the dinner for no charge to members. So mark your calendars and plan to be there.

Be sure to read about more events and activities coming up at the CCC along with all the other informative articles in this newsletter. And thank you all for supporting the Community Cultural Center--YOUR Community Cultural Center!

Until next month,

River

Wine Tasting Added To Garlic Festival Agenda

~ by Suzanne Dailey Howard

Add one more reason to put the 10th annual Garlic Fest, August 21st and 22nd, at the top of your calendar: It's also the site of the first-ever wine tasting event held in Tonasket.

All four of our local North County wineries will be participating, offering samples of their superb varietals and blends. The CCC will have a special wine tasting booth in the park where you will purchase an exclusive "Garlic & Wine Festival" tasting glass along with tasting tickets. (Yes, we will check I.D.s)

The wineries--Copper Mountain, Esther Briques, Lake Crest, and Okanogan Estates--will provide the wine samples, one per ticket. Following your tasting, you may purchase bottles of your favorite wines to take home and enjoy later.

This is a great way to share your new wine discoveries with friends while supporting your center. Board member, Curt Howard, worked hard to coordinate the CCC event along with the wineries, Tonasket City Council, and Washington State Liquor Control Board.

Wine tasting adds another dimension to the garlic, music, dance, food and fun we all associate with the annual Garlic Festival. Don't miss a moment of it!

"Chesaw Jam" Music & Dinner Event A Rocking Good Time

~ by Janet Culp

Chesaw Jam Saturday, July 11, the CCC rocked with the great sounds of the Chesaw Jam Band featuring musicians Judy, Quill, and Ron Hyde, Sandy Vaughn, Reed Engel, Steve Sher, and Sunny Lanigan.

Before the music began we all enjoyed a delicious salad dinner, prepared and served by Ellie Pier and family.

Rae and Janet Dancing Thanks to everyone who participated in the success of the event, and thanks to everyone who attended this CCC fundraiser--we made over $400 to go toward our summer expenses.

Watch the calendar for other fun events coming up; you do not want to miss the fun and camaraderie.

Driftwood Fire--Music and Dinner Event in September

On Friday, September 4, the CCC will be the venue for a music and dinner event, featuring the talented duo, Driftwood Fire.

Their music, described as Indie-Folk-Pop is influenced by folk, jazz, pop and other contemporary sounds, mainly original tunes. Performers Lynn Scharf and Charlotte Formichella have both studied music for many years and have recently begun to achieve the recognition they deserve.

We are very fortunate to be able to bring these artists to the Community Cultural Center, due in part to a grant from Washington State Arts Commission

Admission to the event will be $12 for CCC members, $14 for non-members, and music only $6 and $7, respectively. Dinner will be served beginning at 6pm and the music will start at 7:30. The menu will be posted a few weeks before the event, but you can be assured it will be a fabulous dinner, prepared by our talented cooks.

For a preview of Driftwood Fire’s music, log on to their website at www.DriftwoodFire.com.

LFW North Dance Has New Offerings For Youths and Adults

Lorrie Fraley Wilson School of Dance will once again be held at the CCC this year, and registration will be on Sunday, August 23, from 12-4. The school is encouraging people to come in and register in person, due to the complex scheduling.

Classes will all be on Mondays, again, beginning September 14. Each class runs through the school year in 3 sessions (fall, winter, spring) of 10 weeks each.

Classes will be as follows:

Registration is a new lower price of $20 per family, if paying monthly or $15 per family if paying by the session – the fee for 45 minute classes is $90 per session, 60 minute classes are $100 per session.

Lorrie Fraley Wilson School of Dance accepts Tonasket Outreach program funds, so if your child is in that program you may qualify.

LFW School of Dance has a new website--the address is: www.lfwdancestudios.com. For more information please call Stacy Gleason at 486-1351 (corrected online 8/3/09--this number has a typo in the print version) or Lorrie Wilson at 995-2544.

Correction: Apple Hill Art Camp was funded largely by OFF (Okanogan Family Faire), not merely by CFNCW as reported in last month's issue of The Center News. We apologize for the misinformation.

Raffle Baskets To Support Garlic Festival

~ Janet Culp

The CCC has wonderful goody-filled raffle baskets that we are currently selling tickets for at $1 each at the Center, Farmers’ Market and other events. The drawing will held be on Saturday, August 22 at the Garlic Festival.

These baskets are made up of merchandise that has been donated by this year's Garlic Festival sponsors and proceeds will go towards expenses incurred in putting on the event. Some of the items included are a garden bell from Baker's Acres, kitchen towels from Roy's Pharmacy, beautiful earrings from Highlandia Jewelry, various gift certificates from local businesses and many other items.

We also have accompanying baskets--a kitchen item basket donated by Tonasket Interiors, and another basket with items donated by various businesses. Each basket will have separate drawings, so there are several chances to be a winner in this raffle. Please get your tickets before the Garlic Festival and help support this fun family event.

We still need help with this year's Garlic Festival. Staffing the CCC info booth, baking for the Pie Auction, and baking other goodies to sell at the booth. Call River at the CCC Office 486-1328. It's really lots of fun!

Baked Goods Needed For Weekly Farmers’ Market Booth

~by Janet Culp A little reminder: The CCC Farmers’ Market booth needs cookies donated on a weekly basis. Brownies and simple cake also sell well. We offer individually wrapped cookies for .50 cents each, or two small cookies for the same price. We also sell iced tea, lemonade, and ice water. So far we have made between $35 and $45 each week, which all adds up towards our operations costs for the summer.

Please contact River at 486-1328 or Janet at 486-2061 or just bring in your donations to the CCC. Before Thursday put it in the freezer (please leave a note) or on the counter if you come in on Thursday--or just drop off at the Farmers’ Market booth. Thanks in advance for your help with this fundraising project.
