The Center News ~ January 2010
From The Front Office
Happy New Year to all our friends and community members! It’s hard to believe we moved through 2009 so quickly and here we are--2010! Well, there’s lots in store for you all at the CCC--this year promises wonderful events, visiting with old and new friends, new building renovations and much more.
Looking at January’s calendar it’s evident that we are in full swing here at the CCC. We have two Friday Night Coffee Houses planned for this month so be sure to make it on down for some great entertainment. Denny Richardson and friends will be with us on the 8th and our friend Sunny Lanigan will bring together a group of musicians for the January 22nd performance. Both events guarantee a lot of fun--read more on later in this newsletter. Remember, there is never a cover charge for the CCC Friday Night Coffee Houses, so it will fit in with everybody’s winter budget!
Also planned for this month is a wonderful event on January 16th--a special showing of the documentary For the Next 7 Generations, followed by our favorite Marimba band, KUNDA! This should be a fabulous evening, one that you do not want to miss. I have had the privilege of previewing the film and can tell you that it's inspiring and uplifting--will bring tears to your eyes and create hope and promise for the future. There’s more information on the documentary on farther down, or you can log-on to: www.forthenext7generations.com.
Admission to this fabulous evening is on a sliding-scale basis, with much of the proceeds going to support the Grandmothers and their mission. We won’t be serving a dinner that night, but rather light refreshments during the intermission. If you are able to bring in baked goodies for this even, or either of the Coffee Houses, we’d be greatly appreciative--please let us know if you can help.
In closing, I’d like to express my gratitude for this awesome community and what it means to be a part of the whole. Do you remember learning years ago in math class that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts? In a sense, that is something we can apply to our lives here--alone, we can accomplish just so much, but combined with friends, coworkers and community, there’s little that can’t be achieved.
And the Community Cultural Center is the living example of what a small group of determined individuals can do when they share a common vision for the greater good. Just look at the sum of the parts--we’re truly amazing! And thank you all for being an important part of the CCC.
Until next time,
River
Seedy Saturday, An Okanogan Valley Seed Exchange at CCC
People from all around the Okanogan and north-central Washington are invited to the CCC on Saturday, January 9, for Tonasket's Seedy Saturday, a local seed event, beginning at 1 pm.
Opening the afternoon's event will be a group discussion on how to grow seed, how to keep varieties true-to-seed, how to select for locally adapted varieties. and other seedy topics. How can our region become more self-reliant in seed production? What seeds will you commit to growing out in 2010?
Then from 3-5pm there will be a seed swap, sales, and giveaway. Anyone may bring seeds to exchange, give-away or sell; vegetables, flowers, herbs. crops, green manures, grain, etc, Preferably these will be seeds that you grew or were grown locally, but adapted varieties from elsewhere are acceptable if you have surplus. Even if you don't have seeds to swap but want to obtain seeds this is a place to go. Seed "give-aways" are encouraged and small local seed companies will also have seeds to sell.
The first Seedy Saturday was created by Sharon Rempel, director of the Canadian Heritage Seed Program, as a way to bring a large number of people together to share seeds and stores. The first event was February 14, 1989, St. Valentine's Day, because seed is at the HEART of food security in every community. Over 500 people came to hear talks about seeds, swap and buy seeds and share their stories about their favorite plants. The event was held at Van Dusen Botanical Gardens in Vancouver, BC. Our Tonasket event aims to start out a little more humble.

Upcoming Friday Night Coffee Houses & Other Entertainment
January's Friday Night Coffee Houses, scheduled for the 8th and 22nd of this month, will offer an opportunity for folks to sit back, eat delicious handmade pizza, and enjoy the talents of our local musicians.
On January 8, Denny Richardson will grace our stage (in the front room), a singer-songwriter in the Neil Young tradition. Along with Denny will be several of his friends--musicians all, they will provide us with an entertaining evening, for sure.
Then, on Friday, January 22, the CCC will host our local. foot-stomping Chesaw Jam Band, a group of talented musicians--featuring Sunny Lanigan, Sandy Vaughn, Ron, Judy and Quill Hyde, and with several others.
The 14th Annual Family Talent Show is coming up as well--slated for Saturday, February 13. This year's theme is From The Heart, in honor of Valentine's Day, and gives us all a chance to share the love we feel for our friends, family and the community we all hold very dear. Details on times, etc, will be announced shortly. It has been decided to not provide a dinner this year, as we will still be in the front room and logistics make it difficult to serve food and clean up during the performances. Watch for more information on this annual family event.

New Membership Categories Offered
At a recent CCC Board of Directors’ meeting, it was decided to establish new, enhanced membership categories. For years the CCC has offered several categories of membership, as well as an opportunity to donate additional funds if people so choose. Prices have basically remained the same all these years. Now there are three new, enhanced membership categories, each with a special “thank-you” that is offered in return.
For those who wish to upgrade their membership to that of a Supporter ($100 per year) we will send two free tickets to an event of your choice each year. In addition to the usual special privileges offered to our members. Sponsors ($200 per year) will receive tickets as well as an invitation to attend a special annual dinner, along with our dedicated volunteers and Board and staff. Patron of the Arts ($500+ per year) will be offered all the aforementioned gifts along with a free building rental each year.
This is our simple way of saying “thank you!” to all those folks who are willing to stand alongside us--be it by their continued volunteerism or by helping to ensure that we are able to keep our doors
open to the community. So please consider this invitation today--contact the CCC office to find out how you can be a bigger part of the Community Cultural Center!

13 Indigenous Grandmothers Film at CCC This Month
Thirteen cycles of the moon. Each calendar year, as our small planet revolves around the sun, the moon has waxed and waned thirteen times since its creation. Now Mother Earth is in grave danger and thirteen indigenous grandmothers have come together to help heal our planet.
Powerful healers in forces across the globe, spanning geographic and cultural boundaries, the grandmothers celebrate ancient traditions that are ties to the health of the planet and all its inhabitants. With the knowledge that has been passed down to them, an awareness of acute need to act and the kindness, patience, humor and perseverance that accrue with age, these powerful and remarkable thirteen grandmothers will pull you into their orbit as they work to renew the Earth.
Now, for yourself, your children and the generations to follow, share in their life-changing journey.
Join us on Saturday, January 16th at 6pm for an exclusive showing of the documentary For the Next 7 Generations. Because it’s that important. And because when grandmothers talk, you should listen.
