The Center News ~ February 2010
From The Front Office
Are you looking for a cure for the Winter Blahs? Well, you need to look no further than your very own Community Cultural Center! This month is chock-full of entertainment to rouse, to amuse, to delight and to charm. Every weekend offers something--Friday Night Coffee Houses, The Annual Talent Show, a Reggae dance--it’s certainly evident that there will be no lack of entertainment in our little town of Tonasket.
The first Friday Night Coffee House of the month features Sandy Vaughn, Mariliz Romano and Leaha Passaro. We’re in for a wonderful treat with this trio of women on the stage, so check them out February 5th. The following weekend will be the Annual Family Talent Show--look for more information about that event on the back page of this newsletter. Then on Friday, February 19 we will feature Martin Elliot, a local performer who may be remembered from last year’s Garlic Festival. The very next weekend, February 26, will be hosted by the Tonasket Writer’s Group, featuring readings of their literary works. Morningstar will be in the kitchen making his famous handmade pizza for the February Coffee Houses, so be sure to catch at least one show, if not all three. And finally, ending up the month will be The Mighty Lions, a local Reggae band, playing Saturday, February 27. There will be more details on that event out soon, so watch for notices.
For those who may have missed the January 16 showing of the film, For the Next 7 Generations, you may get another chance next fall, as we’re hoping to be able to show it again. The event was a tremendous success, with about 100 people in the front room coming to watch the movie and most staying on to dance to the Marimba band, KUNDA! The entire proceeds from the movie were sent to aid the mission for peace and healing of the planet that the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers stand for. We at the CCC felt honored to be able to share their message with so many people and to help spread the amazing works of these endearing women.
In closing, I’d like to once again thank you all for your continued support of the CCC. Our membership has grown in numbers, our involvement in the community has increased and it seems like more and more people are discovering the Community Cultural Center and what we have to offer North Okanogan County. I’m very proud to know that together we really are making a difference!
Until next time,
River
Food Donations Needed
The monthly Community Dinners project could use donated food for soups, bread, etc. Check your root cellars for surplus – veggies that need to be cooked up and anything you can spare. Dinners are held on the last Sunday of the month.
Acting Workshops For Children and Adults at CCC
Beginning February 18, Katie Johann will be offering a Children’s Drama workshop and a Teen through Adult Drama workshop, both of which will run for three months.
The weekly class for children, ages 8–13 will be on Thursdays, 3-4pm, with the second class, for ages 14 and up scheduled for 4-5:30 Thursday evenings.
Classes will be focusing on truthful interaction, living in the Now, focus and concentration, character study, movement, and privacy in performance. The cost for 3 months is $80 for the children’s class and $100 for the adult class. If you’re not sure you’ll be interested in committing for the entire three-month period Katie is offering an option to try out the classes for $5 and $7, respectively.
At the culmination of the workshops there will be an Evening of Scenes, where the participants will perform to an audience.
Katie Johann has been teaching Drama Workshops for the Summer Art Camp at the CCC for the past 2 years, and is an actor and an ongoing student of acting. She enjoys working with kids of all ages.

Tibetan Slide Show to Benefit Pamtingpa Study Group
On Saturday, February 6, join us at the CCC for a dinner and presentation chronicling James Moore’s journey to Mt. Kailash, Tibet's most remote and holy mountain. Sponsored by the Pamtingpa Center, Tonasket’s center for Buddhist studies, this event is a fundraiser for activities and current construction projects by Pamtingpa and Tashi Choling, of Nelson BC.
Slide show and dinner start at 6pm, followed by dessert and a question and answer session. Admission is $7 for the dinner and presentation, with desserts available by donation. Call Julia Sanderson at (509) 429-9418 for more information.
Crazy Quilt Class Offered This Month
Carol Odell, local artist and quilting instructor, will be giving a Crazy Quilt class at the CCC on Tuesday, February 23, from 1-4pm. The cost is $20 per person.
At this first class participants will be making a simple quilted design large enough for a pillow covering. Students should bring their own portable sewing machines if they have one, which must be in good working order. Those who do not have machines can share with another person.
Fabrics should be cottons for this first project, and not necessarily in a matching design, just a wide variety of colors and prints-scraps or fat quarters. For Crazy Quilting a color theme is not necessary.
If you want to include trims such as lace, ric-rack, embroidery thread, etc. it should be brought along. Irons will be provided. Please bring your own scissors and thread for the sewing machine.
Call Janet Culp at 486-2061 to reserve a place in the class or with further questions.
3rd Annual Green Okanogan Fair at CCC in April
Green Okanogan Alternatives Fair will be held this year on Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 18. The emphasis will be on local foods. On Saturday the 17th there will be several presentations, a film, lunch from locally produced foods and recycling collection of plastics, glass, and E-waste, all at the CCC. On the 18th there will be a local farm garden tour.
Anyone interested in volunteering to help with this event is welcome. Call Loreen at 486-2769 or 509-981-4403 (cell), or join GO's FaceBook Group discussion.
Mark your calendars for this informative and worthwhile event and plan to be there.

Annual Family Talent Show February 13
From The Heart is the theme of the 14th annual CCC Family Talent Show, slated for Saturday, February 13, beginning at 6:30pm. The evening’s event will take place in the front room this year due to the ongoing back room renovations.
Admission is $4 for CCC members and $5 for the general public. Talent Show performers will get in for no charge. Rather than serving a dinner this year, as in years past, we will be offering light refreshments, available by donation.
Last year’s talent show exemplified the diversity within our community. Vaudeville, slapstick, reggae, acrobats, folk songs and dancers were just a few of the acts that were presented. Bud McSpadden, our returning MC, was like a chameleon going through many costume changes and no one was safe from being exposed by his comic attacks. There’s no telling what he will have in store for us this year!
If you would like to perform please call no later than Thursday, February 11. Due to the space limitations we are asking for a focus on smaller and low-volume acts. For scheduling and information call John Jones at 486-2479 or Janet Culp at 486-2061. Make sure to let us know your sound and stage needs.
