The Center News ~ June 2010

From The Front Office

This month marks the beginning of my seventh year at the helm of the Community Cultural Center. Hard to believe that much time has passed, and yet I can clearly remember when this job was only 20 hours a week, I wasn’t entirely sure I’d get a paycheck on time and I could work all day in my office without seeing anybody else. Now it’s the rare hour when I have the building all to myself! And of course, that will continue to change as we continue with our successes.

One of the big changes that I have recently noticed is performers are now getting in touch with us, rather than our having to solicit them to come play here. That’s huge! It tells me that we are beginning to develop a reputation amongst entertainers who are looking for a small venue. And they love coming here – we often hear accolades regarding the center and its merits as a venue, as well as this organization as a whole. And then these entertainers go home and tell their friends; the word is out: the Community Cultural Center is an awesome place to perform!

For those of you who may have missed the Flamenco event, I am sorry, as you missed a rare treat. Eric and Encarnación Jaeger provided us with an amazing evening, one that will not soon be forgotten. The duo had such a fine time performing here that they have promised to return, so be sure to watch for that.

Although events will be slowing down now for the summer and during our remodeling period, we still have a few exciting activities in store. Coming right up will be Apple Hill Art Camp, now in its sixth year. Please note there are still a few openings for the two Tonasket camps, held June 14-18. More on Art Camp later in this newsletter.

Also this month is the Conscious Culture Festival, slated for June 11 and 12, at the Barter Faire site, east of Tonasket. The CCC is helping to sponsor this first-year event, which features folk singer Buffy Sainte-Marie as headliner. I hope you can make it up there, as this event promises to be a fun time.

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage anyone who has a little extra time to consider volunteering at the CCC. Helping with an event or undertaking doesn’t mean giving an inordinate amount of time or doing a task that you don’t enjoy. Volunteering at the CCC is really a lot of fun. We are working on some plans to make volunteering even more rewarding – scroll down for more on that.

In closing, I would like to thank everyone for your continued support for this exciting and vibrant organization. I know I have said this before, but it bears repeating – without you, our dedicated members, we would cease to thrive, even exist.

Until next month,

River

5K Walk /Run Plans Underway

CCC Board member Curt Howard has proposed that the center sponsor a 5K walk/run to raise funds to provide a scholarship for a student pursuing a career in fine and performing arts. The event is tentatively scheduled for this fall. This is a fun opportunity for all, runners and non-runners alike, to volunteer. Many hands are needed. If you would like to help plan and run this event, please call Curt at 486-1746.

Volunteering at the CCC

Community Cultural Center volunteers hold a very important place in the inner workings of our organization. Mostly unseen, these dedicated folks are the people who bring us a large percentage of the entertainment, the classes and the informative events that the public has come to expect here at the CCC.

Janet Culp is the Volunteer Coordinator for events at the Community Cultural Center. She encourages volunteers to consider what they want to do – what excites them and which special skills they can offer. There are many areas where folks can lend a helping hand – anything from cooking and dish washing, taking tickets and theater production, to hosting a workshop or giving classes – nothing is considered menial or nonessential. Janet reminds us, “A wide pool of volunteers is needed in order to support the ongoing activities at the CCC and we don’t want any one person to work so much that they get burned out.”

If you are considering becoming a volunteer call Janet at 486-2061 and let her know where your interests lie.

On top of everything else, volunteering at CCC events truly is a whole lot of fun!

Tonasket’s Apple Hill Art Camp Still has Openings

Apple Hill Summer Art Camp for children will be offered at the CCC June 14-18. Now in its sixth year, the camp gives children an opportunity to study art with professional and accomplished artists at a cost of $1 per day.

This year’s camp theme is Illusion, and some of the classes on the roster are: Tie-dye and painted t-shirts, Nature weaving, Scratch art, Calligraphy and poster design, String painting, Twig picture frames, Cornstarch paper creations, Felted items, Music and Drama, Fractals, Zen tangles, Paper maché, Clay mask-making, Body movement with masks, Printed fabrics, Cake sculpture and much more.

There is still room in the Tonasket camp for both age groups. 5-7 year old campers will attend 10:30-12:00 and the 8-10 year old kids, 1-4:30. Call Peggy Crandall at (509) 223-3172 to register.

New this year will be high school students teaching the 5-7 year old group. These are some of the Apple Hill Art Camp veterans who attended camp in the past and now want to help teach.

On Friday, the last day of camp, there will be a final presentation, which will include drama performances and cake eating!

Ebay Funding for the CCC

Do you have stuff that you have been keeping around, simply because you know it has value; antiques, collectibles, vintage items – things that you hate to just get rid of, but really don’t want or need anymore? Most of us do, and often those little “dust-collectors” seem to be much more trouble than they are worth! The good news is that Janet Culp has offered her Ebay listing skills as part of a fundraiser for the CCC, which could make those little trinkets worth quite a bit for your community center.

Please do not drop goods off at the center, as we are in the process remodeling the building. Call Janet at (509) 486-2061 for more details on how you can help.

Community Cultural Center Receives Operational Funding

The CCC has recently been awarded two operating grants – one in the amount of $5,000 from the Community Foundation of North Central Washington (CFNCW) and a $4000 grant from the Okanogan Family Faire (OFF).

OFF is a local organization, set up to bestow funds that have been generated by the annual fair, to local charities and non-profits. Having a strong emphasis on improving the lives of Okanogan community members, OFF has generously funded the CCC numerous times in the past.

CFNCW, located in Wenatchee, WA, is a charitable community trust. It was organized as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) in 1986 using the $2.1 million from the sale of the nonprofit Chelan County Medical Service Corporation (a Blue Shield plan). The Foundation acts as a vehicle for linking community resources with community needs by building a pool of funds, investing them, and distributing income from the funds to nonprofit organizations serving NCW communities.

May Events Entertaining, Educational

There was standing room only in the front room at the May 2 Flamenco performance at the CCC. Encarnación and Eric Jaegar, Seattle based performers, put on a magnificent show for a most enthusiastic audience. Performers and spectators alike were clearly having a truly wonderful time the entire evening, which was reflected in the room’s ambiance.

The event could not have been possible had it not been for our great group of volunteers: Kris Baker, Janet Culp, Jean Pfeifer and Susie Shaddox were the kitchen crew, serving authentic-style Spanish Tapas, Suzanne Dailey Howard and Julie Greenwood were at the entry and John Jones was mixing sound. Check out a few (dialup-friendly) pictures of the event.

Last month’s second visiting performer was Dr. Linda Allen of Bellingham, WA on May 14. Presented by Inquiring Minds, of Humanities, Washington, the presentation Here’s To The Women was equally inspiring to those who attended. Dr. Allen shared songs, stories and pictures of many of the women who helped to shape our lives today, such as the Suffragettes. Opening the evening was a delicious spaghetti dinner, prepared by Lauralee Carey, Patti Arbuckle, Kim Jacobs and friends, with Kathy and Angela Vaughn as clean-up crew. Proceeds from the dinner helped pay Dr. Allen’s honorarium.

CCC Helps Sponsor Local Skateboard Competition

A little rain did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm at the first-ever T-Town SK8 Throwdown, held at the B3 Skate Park in Tonasket on May 22. Nineteen competitors, between the ages of four and 27, participated in the event which was sponsored, in part, by the Community Cultural Center.

Entry fee was $15, which also supplied the participants with a SK8 Throwdown t-shirt and dinner, served at the CCC.

There were 35 sponsors in all, many local businesses and organizations. Prizes included skateboards, clothing, skateboarding shoes, backpacks, caps, and a tool set, donated by Napa automotive, which is specific for skate board maintenance. BlueJay Hankins was DJ and a professional announcer and judges from Lib Tech were on hand to keep everything running smoothly.

There were visiting skaters from all over the region: BC, Seattle, Bellingham, Leavenworth, Spokane all came to compete against local area kids. Several age brackets enabled the participants to compete with skaters of their own caliber.

The organizers all did an excellent job – Jashson and Kathy Vaughan, Candy Johnson, the Epley family from Napa Automotive in Tonasket all worked hard to make this event the tremendous success it was.

Tonasket Farmers’ Market Welcomes You!

~by Suzanne Dailey Howard

Welcome back to another season of fresh and fabulous local produce. May 20th heralded the earliest season opening in the market’s history. In what seemed to be a festive family reunion, 15 vendors braved a cool and windy afternoon to set up their colorful tents in Triangle Park. Many familiar faces plus a few fresh ones brought the park to life with their spring greens, plant starts, baked goods and herbal products.

new sign pic Welcoming visitors to the Tonasket Farmers’ Market is a new sign, located just north of town, facing traffic along highway 97. The large (eight by eight foot) sign, made by Jeremy Jewel, reminds travelers of the market held every Thursday from 3-7 p.m. in Triangle Park. It was erected by three stalwart volunteers, Matt, Tone and Bob, and we send a big “thank you” to all for a job well done.

CCC sponsors the weekly market, which runs through October. Many of you are already long time members of the market family, as sellers, shoppers or both. If you have yet to try the market, what are you waiting for? It is the perfect place to meet your friends and neighbors, shop locally, and put the freshest food on your table. When you join “The Tonasket Market Family”, a warm welcome is guaranteed.

CCC Attends NPI Annual Nonprofit Summit

On May 10, several CCC representatives attended the annual Nonprofit Practices Institute Summit, held in Chelan, WA. The daylong event was designed to offer nonprofit volunteers, employees and board members an opportunity for networking and skill building. Topics included: nonprofit financial issues, valuing volunteers, grant seeking basics, tech planning, nonprofit risk management and various other subjects that are specific to nonprofit organizations.

The summit was sponsored jointly by several regional foundations and other entities; Community Foundation of North Central Washington, Icicle Fund and Chelan-Douglas Land Trust, along with the Cordell, Neher & Company accounting firm and Jeffers Danielson Sonn & Aloward, P.S. More than a dozen presenters volunteered their time to share their areas of expertise with attendees.

Along with excellent networking opportunities, the summit left the participants inspired and encouraged; what we are doing here at the CCC is essential to the health and vitality of this area.

Icicle Fund director, Joan Alway, summed it up with this: “Behind all nonprofit work is the goal to make a social change.” What better significant community endeavor can there be than helping to create the Community Cultural Center?
